Improv Theatre Workshop
Something that every university student will struggle with at least once in their higher education career is whether or not they will fit in. If they can find their ‘tribe’. Every university in every city in every country will offer multiple societies suited to any type of person. But when everything looks so interesting and you’re only one person with a limited amount of time, how do you choose? Is it possible to join the environmental sustainability society, sign up to choir and meet for a student parliament meeting twice a week?
The beauty of joining ESN is that our wide array of events and activities cater to everyone whilst removing that pressure of joining multiple groups. Whether your passion lies in pub quizzes, litter picking, dozing off in the sauna or working behind the scenes, ESN will always offer something that piques your interest. As I found out recently when I attended the hugely successful ESN Improv Theatre Workshop.
Bryan, Ricky, Nikhil and Chrisitan (together the formidable force of Chaotic Neutral) are a Gothenburg based improvisational theater company that put on their own performances (Judge Ricky brought the house down during Gothenburg Fringe 2022) and host workshops for the unnurtured theater darlings who want to have a go themselves.
Which is why I spent one Saturday afternoon running around a Chalmers lecture hall in a pair of mushroom socks wrangling an invisible cat and trying to keep my head on my shoulders.
It takes a lot of courage to get up and have a go at something you have never tried before, especially at something as intricate and challenging as improv. Not everyone can be a seasoned thespian like me, but even for those who are nervous or are not even sure what improvisational theater means, the team at Chaotic Neutral will guide you through the process with big laughs and bigger personalities. The quintessence of theatre is that it lives solely in memory, so even if something goes wrong there is nothing to hold you to that and the team certainly won’t make you feel embarrassed - especially seeing as no one else in the room knew what you were going to say either!
All Chaotic Neutral wants from their participants is a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. Follow the team and their upcoming projects via their Facebook page, and if you decide to be brave and try something new or return to something you’ve always loved, be prepared to be totally knackered afterwards!
