Swedish Culture Night

As an exchange student in Gothenburg, one of the most common questions that I get asked is, what made you choose Sweden? The weather is pretty similar to the UK (except for the snow), and it’s a long term goal of mine to become fluent in another language. I wonder if Midsommar is similar to the film? Gothenburg welcomes students from all over the world every year and most are excited to learn about the place they are going to be living in, for one semester, one year, or even for the foreseeable future. So, the team at ESN put their heads together and organised a Swedish culture night!
One of the staple characteristics of Sweden is the luxury of having four distinct seasons. Those from as far afield as the United States can attest to the four seasons being hot, very hot, super hot, and crispy. Each season in Sweden arrives with celebrations, food, and cultural events unique to that time of year. Holed up in a cosy pub on a windy afternoon, we had Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter scattered across the room featuring items, food and activities associated with that season. A member of ESN stationed at each table to talk to the participants, give important dates related to that season and not-so-subtly sneak answers to the quiz clues hidden around the room.
Decorating pepparkakor, listening to Swedish music and drinking a cup of piping hot tea were just some of the activities taking place during this event. It was a perfect opportunity for both new and existing students to meet each other and also to compare the culture of Sweden to their own countries, and it was interesting for me to see how my knowledge of Swedish life holds up after living here for seven months!
In my opinion, the best ESN member was sitting on the winter table. Just saying.
