O'Leary's Pub Quiz

2023, written by Cerie Taylor

As international students living and studying in Gothenburg, there will always be something that reminds you of home. Maybe it's the weather - freak snowstorm in March, anyone? Maybe it's the stunning archipelago where you can go island hopping on a mild Sunday afternoon. Or maybe it’s the university itself. Amd how the perfect study spot you found in the library transports you across the sea as soon as you sit down.

I’m from England. So for me it’s the pubs. So many pubs.

And what better way to spend your evening at the pub than with a quiz! A few friends and I recently attended a pub quiz at O’Leary’s, a popular sports pub here in Gothenburg (there are plenty of O’Leary’s scattered around, this particular one is in Valand), and because I’m not as much of a sore loser as they are, I will definitely be back.

Yes, we didn’t win. No, I’m not bitter.

The weekly quiz is hosted every Wednesday night, with Australian quiz master Mike at the helm, with a whole host of general knowledge questions, including music, geography, films and the infamous anagram.

If you haven’t solved one yet, well…hang in there.

With a special pub quiz menu available at a reduced price to keep oir brains ticking, it was great fun listening to the songs, squinting at the blurry pictures of a celebrity and trying not to accidentally give away the answer.

And if you feel like you have all the knowledge in the world about a particular subject that never crops up, find Mike on Instagram at mikesgothenburgquizzes and submit a question! If you get your own question wrong, he’ll laugh at you.

Mike’s pub quizzes are very popular so if you want to attend, be sure to book a table! They are hosted every Wednesday, from 19:00. Next week it could be you in front of a big plate of fish and chips taking home the cash prize.
