ESN Sea Battle (30th Anniversary Edition)
November 2022, written by Ceri Taylor
We all find ourselves in situations where we are surprised by what we are capable of. Maybe it was lugging a 20kg suitcase up a flight of stairs when you first moved into your accommodation in Gothenburg. Or travelling to the far north of Sweden and hiking the midnight sun trail. For me it was during the ESN Sea Battle, where I did 20+ hour days, danced while the sun went down and was still dancing when it came up again, and broke three Guinness world records in one day. I promise it wasn’t a fever dream.
The ESN Sea Battle is a notorious student event that occurs every semester and promises to be a once in a lifetime experience. Maybe twice, or three, or four times, like some of us at the Erasmus Student Network who fly across countries and travel miles just to go on the trip. Multiple ESN sections from all over the world are having the time of their lives on a beautiful cruise ship sailing smoothly to one of the Baltic capitals. You might be tired, you might be sweaty, you might be hot and you might be drunk but you will definitely not be bored.
There are plenty of activities available to partake in throughout the day and into the night on the Baltic Queen. Even if you are not the biggest fan of partying deep into the night, there will always be something you can do. Why not start the day off with a calming yoga class, or go to a theatre performance in the evening if you’d rather take it slow. The cabins on board are spacious enough to have your own house(boat) party with your friends, whether you came with them or made them on board. And not forgetting the opportunity to explore one of the beautiful Baltic capitals. Take a walking tour, get lost and stumble on a cosy place for lunch or go shopping for a new outfit for the parties later on.
ESN Sea Battle turned 30 in November 2022 which saw us turn out a very special edition of the famous event. ESN Sea Battle now holds three Guinness World Records to their name, including ✨me✨ as the UK representative for the most nationalities at a coffee party. Catch me bragging about that until the day I die.
ESN Sea Battle takes place twice a year so whether you’re here for one semester or two, a master’s student, internship, or even if you just stumbled upon this blog when you googled “stuff to do in Sweden” this unforgettable voyage is ready and waiting for you. You don’t have to be a student to join the ESN Sea Battle, but all those with a blue ESN card are eligible for a discount! Have I made you want to go back to uni yet?
Sea you there!
